Bomber Baseball's Florida Trip Recap

On March 28th, the Burroughs baseball team returned to St. Louis after a successful spring training trip to Florida, finishing with a hard-fought 3-2 record. The trip began with an intense matchup against Malvern Prep, a powerhouse loaded with Division I talent and a program that has claimed six Pennsylvania state championships since 2015, including their most recent title in 2024. Though the Bombers ultimately fell short, they sent a strong message by scoring 12 runs on 15 hits, setting the tone for a promising season ahead.

After going 1-1 in their next two games, which included a win over Millbrook School and a loss to Buckingham Browne & Nichols, the Bombers, led by standout performances from Ahmad Muhammad ‘25, Amir Muhammad ‘27, and Cooper Desloge ‘25, were primed for the trip’s most unforgettable moment against Lawrence Academy. The Bombers would face off against John Paone, a Duke commit and one of the top high school pitchers in the nation, drawing over 15 MLB scouts to the game.

In the first inning, the Bombers stunned Paone and everyone in attendance. Ahmad Muhammad’s single, paired with hit-by-pitches from Brendan Purcell ‘25 and Desloge, loaded the bases. A wild pitch put the Bombers on top, and they held a 1-0 lead through three innings, thanks to Purcell’s masterful pitching. But as the seventh inning unfolded, the Bombers found themselves trailing 4-1.

In a dramatic rally, the Bombers mounted an unforgettable comeback. Singles from Amir Muhammad and Brendan Purcell, combined with walks by Ahmad Muhammad, Dhruva Lahoti ‘25, and Thomas Smith ‘25, pushed across two crucial runs and loaded the bases for Micah Reichman ‘27. With the pressure mounting, Reichman delivered a clutch double that scored two runs, putting the Bombers up 5-4 with just one out. A wild pitch and an RBI groundout by Hank Karlovic ‘26 added two more runs, pushing the Bombers to a 7-4 lead. Purcell closed out the game and completed a stellar pitching performance to seal the victory.

The Bombers wrapped up their spring training trip with a dominant performance in a rematch against Buckingham Browne & Nichols. Max Levey ‘25, Ahmad Muhammad, Micah Reichman, and Thomas Smith each posted multiple hits, while the Muhammad brothers and Max Steinbach ‘25 pitched well on the mound, securing the Bombers' victory and ending the trip on a high note.

Beyond the baseball field, the team also took the opportunity to bond off the diamond. Between games, they spent time at the beach, enjoyed the hot tub and pool, and gathered to watch March Madness basketball. The team came together during outings to eat, playing basketball, football, and video games, fishing trips, and dinner at a hibachi restaurant.

With their spring training in the books, the Bombers are set to kick off their regular season on April 1st against Priory at Burroughs’ brand-new turf field. Be there to support the Bombers!
